Voice: Often heard flight call is a loud, double-note “kak-kak……...kak-kak………” Also a longer rattle, “kak-kak-kak-kak……” Lower, slower, and louder than the call of Belted Kingfisher.

Status: Locally common resident along watercourses in the Valley. Often heard and seen in riparian corridor in the Falcon Dam area.

Habitat: Riparian woodlands; shade trees on the banks of rivers and resacas.

Best Spots: Estero Llano Grande State Park WBC, Edinburg Scenic Wetlands WBC, Riparian woodlands in the Falcon Dam area, including the World Birding Center’s Roma Bluffs, Santa Margarita Ranch, Salineño and Chapeño.

Similar Species: Much larger than Belted Kingfisher (winter resident) with massive bill; extensively rufous on underparts.
