Status: Locally common summer resident throughout the Valley, uncommon migrant along the coast; rare in the Valley winter.

Habitat: Woodland edges and weedy fields.

Best Spots: Groove billed Anis can be found just about anywhere in the riparian corridor along the Rio Grande in summer season. Good spots include Santa Ana NWR, Bentsen SP, and Sabal Palm Grove. Sometimes seen in winter at the above locations. In migration, anis can sometimes be seen on bayshore woodlots at South Padre Island.

Similar Species: No other blackbird has such a massive bill. Groove-billed Anis also have long tails, drooping wings, and low and direct flight. Voice distinctive.
